About Us

In 1974, founder Duane Arlo Johnson was working in middle management in Salt Lake City when he decided he wanted something different from corporate life. Inspired by one of his sisters, who owned a drapery business in Ogden, he set out to learn the trade and build a business of his own.

When Duane arrived in Ogden, his sister gave him a simple challenge: “You have to sell a drapery job before you can make one.” He did exactly that. Starting with no sewing machines, no equipment, and little more than determination, he built his business from the ground up. As the company grew, it became a true family operation, with many of his children joining him in the workroom. At one point, eight of his children were working full-time in the business alongside him.

Seeking warmer winters and new opportunities, Duane moved his family to Texas and obtained his real estate license. However, he quickly discovered there was a strong demand for custom drapery workrooms in the area. Rather than pursue real estate, he founded Johnson Drapery, continuing the craft he had come to love.

Among the children learning the trade was Phil Johnson, who began working alongside his father at just 13 years old. After years of experience in the family business—and a few memorable father-son moments along the way—Phil continued developing his skills and eventually worked with industry mentors Karen and Paul Johnson, further refining his expertise.

In 2004, Phil returned to Utah. While attending Brigham Young University and pursuing studies in nursing, he found a drapery-related job through the Yellow Pages and began working for a local business owner named Randy. After a year and a half, Phil purchased and took over the business. At the time, the company focused primarily on industrial drapery. Phil saw an opportunity to specialize in custom residential drapery and soft window treatments, and he set out to build a company centered on craftsmanship, quality, and personalized service.

Over the next two decades, the business flourished with the help of an exceptional team. Employees such as Lisa Passmore, John Johnson, and Tom Johnson dedicated many years to the company, becoming an important part of its legacy and growth.

Today, the tradition continues with a new generation. Spencer Johnson joined the company in 2021, Katie Johnson  in 2025, and Ben Johnson in 2026. More than fifty years after Duane sold his very first drapery job, the business remains family-owned and dedicated to the same values that started it all: hard work, craftsmanship, and creating beautiful custom window treatments that stand the test of time.

Established in 1974. Family-owned for three generations.
